psychotic symptoms or hospitalisation (approximately 40–50 per cent). If someone is concerned about having a diagnosis of schizophrenia, it can be empowering to share some of the information outlined in Chapter 1. For example, if the label of schizophrenia distresses them, people may be pleased to learn that there is little reliability or validity to the diagnosis, and that psychotic symptoms lie on a continuum with normal psychological functioning. Equally, they may find it reduces their distress to learn about the way other cultures view psychosis (for example, in some cultures, people who hear voices are viewed as a shaman). Provision of information about famous or successful people who hear voices or have had delusional beliefs can also be useful. Examples include William Blake, Joan of Arc, Philip K.Dick, Pythagoras, Gandhi, Zoe Wanamaker and Anthony Hopkins. Examples of standardised information about hearing voices that we give to patients can be found in the appendix. However, it is important to note that even the provision of educational interventions such as these should be formulation driven.
